How to Choose the Right Hoist

Author bio: Guest post is written by Hoists Direct Inc., a major distributor of hoists of all different kinds.  They carry various varieties of the electric hoist and the manual hoist.  Check out their website for more information.

Hoists can serve an array of functions.  Hoists can assist with large-scale construction projects, small car repairs, and other small or large tasks.  Hoists can be run electrically or manually.  They often serve a similar function as a portable crane.

There are a few different elements to consider before deciding which hoist to buy.  It’s important to think about the specific application that you need the hoist for, as well as whether it will be used inside or outside.  In addition to the environment space, it’s important to think about whether the hoist needs to work in a small or large space.  For example, a pneumatic hoist is particularly compact so it works well in tight spaces.

Here are some of the factors to think about when selecting a hoist:

1) Speed: There are hoists that can move very fast and others that move slower. The speed that you require typically depends on the approximate weight and lift of the items that you’re going to move.  Faster isn’t always better when moving heavy items!

2) Lifting capability: The lift is the height to which the items being lifted by the hoist need to travel.  In order to know this, it’s essential to know where the hoist will hang from.  It’s also important to know how near or far the items being lifted will sit in relation to the hoist.  It’s best to add a few feet to the estimated height.

3) Safety features:  You should always read the manual before operating a hoist.  All hoists should be operated with full attention and care because they are very powerful machines.
