Add Elegance to a Home with Window Cornice Treatment

July 26, 2012 | Posted in: Goods and Services

One of the most overlooked components of interior decorating and home décor is window treatment. Shutter blinds or basic curtains are about as far as many people get when selecting the look of the windows in their home. The addition of a cornice board to a window however, can produce a completely new aesthetic that enhances the look of your room and even helps protect curtains.

A cornice board is a wall mounted decoration that is installed over the top of a window frame. Cornice design is as varied as upholstery or furniture and can be a subdued, minor addition, or a major attention-getter. Cornice boards are upholstered sections of wood that mask the top of a window frame. They form a sort of rigid U-shape as they stick out of the wall and feature a board that is parallel to the floor to prevent dust from dirtying the top of curtains.

Cornices are made in varying heights and depths to match the other aspects of a room. The room-facing boards can be cut in a pattern to match the contours of other furniture in the room, like a rocking chair or serving set. Foam cornice padding is made that has a simple aluminum frame covered with upholstered, contour-cut foam for specialty shapes. Fiberfill is often added to wood cornices for a full, pillowy look, much like cushions. These additions to a home can be bought as ready-made products, or custom-made to detailed specifications. Some companies even sell a cornice kit to make a DIY cornice on your own for people who want more hands-on involvement in decorating their homes.

Sometimes you get the feeling your home is missing a final ingredient, and without it, things are slightly left of center. To bring everything together with that final touch, consider adding cornice board window treatment to your home.
